Cleaning up chimney smoke that made the village look like a factory
There was so much chimney smoke that the village looked like a factory, so I removed the smoke from 13 houses, everything except the tavern and guild, and kept the chimneys. The generator follows the same rule, so rebuilding gives the same result.
Looking around the village, there was so much chimney smoke that it looked like a factory. I decided to keep smoke only on the tavern, guild and blacksmith, and for every other house remove just the smoke and leave the chimney.
The smoke is a particle effect inside the SUNTAIL house prefabs, a separate object from the chimney tops I kept back in 143. 15 houses had smoke: 4 large houses (tavern, shop, guild, west house) and 11 filler houses. The blacksmith prefab has no chimney or smoke, so it never had smoke to begin with.
Screens I built
I removed the smoke from 13 houses, everything except the tavern and guild. The 30 chimney flues and tops are untouched. Now smoke only shows above the green-roofed tavern in the northwest and the guild southeast of the plaza. In Play, I confirmed both smoke effects play 60 particles each over 60 frames.
The two remaining smoke effects still darken at night. The day/night manager only swaps the smoke material and doesn't reference the objects, so removing smoke doesn't affect it.
Things I thought about
- Deleting, not disabling. Same approach as when I removed the house interiors: I saved the scene with the smoke removed from the prefab instances.
- The same rule in the generator. For houses other than the tavern, guild and blacksmith, only the smoke gets removed. During full generation it's called right after removing the interiors when placing houses, and I made a new menu that applies only the chimney smoke rule to the open scene. Running it again gives the same result.
Next up
- If I want smoke on the blacksmith too, I'll need to add a chimney top first (the prefab doesn't have one right now)
